12–15 years
This category is for anyone aged between 12 and 15 when the competition closes. If you love taking photos, then why not put your skills to good use and create some amazing shots of animals? Even if you're new to photography you might be surprised to find you're a natural.
The brief
We're looking for striking, moving or quirky images that tell a story about a particular animal and show their behavioural characteristics. Most of all, it's about celebrating animals and demonstrating your understanding of what makes them interesting or exciting.
Getting started
We're looking for photos that have been well considered and capture a particular mood or atmosphere. When you're thinking about what you'd like to photograph, consider the following ideas.
- Location Think about somewhere you really like to spend time. It could be your back garden, a local park, or anywhere you go to see wildlife, farm animals or pets.
- Animal Do you have a favourite animal that you think is especially photogenic? Maybe you like waiting patiently to spot a fox?
- Theme Is there an idea or theme you'd like to focus on? This could be protecting animals or capturing them in motion, but there are many possibilities.
- Mood You can create a variety of moods or atmospheres in your photo. You could have very dark compositions, or maybe you prefer your photos to be bright, with lots of movement.
There's lots more advice from Chris Packham and wildlife photographer Andrew Forsyth in our photo tips section.
You can also be inspired by previous winners' photos in our galleries.
When you're out and about trying to get the perfect shot, don't ever put your safety at risk.
